Solar Concentrator Photovoltaic Power System (HCPV)

The Avellino project at 997.5 kWpDC / Hcpv d.o.o. Overview
Hcpv d.o.o., based in Slovenia has pioneered the development of Highly Concentrated Photovoltaic (HCPV) systems that use concentration to substantially reduce the cost of solar energy.  Since 2008, Hcpv d.o.o.'s mission has been to leverage the benefits of concentrated solar to achieve economic parity with fossil fuel generated power alternatives, making Hcpv d.o.o. the first choice for alternative energy.
Hcpv d.o.o.’s breakthrough Sunflower cpvTM system uses Fresnel lenses to concentrate the sun 500:1 onto ultra high efficiency solar cells adapted from the satellite industry.  Isofoton HCPV module operates at twice the efficiency of traditional crystalline silicon PV panels and when coupled with our revolutionary low cost and low profile 2-axis tracker, the Sunflower cpv system generates 20% more energy than traditional PV panels at 5o-Tilt installed on Avellino.
Hcpv d.o.o. has taken a differentiated approach to Concentrated Solar.  We use a single module tracker creating a low profile design that is aesthetically appealing, measuring only four (5) feet
, with a total point load of less than 200 lbs.  Sunflower cpv® Emcore modules concentrate the sun 500:1, achieving over 38% aperture efficiency. Hcpv d.o.o.’s Sunflower cpv® system employs a unique modular mounting structure that integrates into the roof structure.  The hearth structure assembles in minutes on the ground with simple wrenches.  After the modules are installed and wired up (also on the ground), the complete roof sections will be craned up onto their steel columns.  No installation work will be done in the air.  Based on final project discussion, we could also schedule the build and complete the project in a few short weeks.  The roof density allows for a maximum of installed power with a minimum of shadow energy losses.  Because of the dual-axis tracking principle the direction of the towards south become irrelevant.  No matter what direction is situated in, it will always track the sun with maximum solar energy harvesting.  The shading factor that the HCPV modules themselves provide on the cars below is standard at approx. 35% (at noon).
The Sunflower cpv™ solar system is designed to minimize the decrease of energy production due to soiling on the module glass surface and therefore provides an intelligent dust management in four modes:
1.       Dust mitigation: During the night, the solar modules are set in a -15o downturn position to avoid night time dust settling on glass
2.       Dew mitigation: Night time stow position eliminates due settling and therefore dust adhesion to the glass
3.       Auto Cleaning: Weather station detects rain events and system positions modules into optimum cleaning position
4.       Clean Mode: Positions the modules for easy cleaning.  Allows operator to set modules in an upright position for fast & easy cleaning access.
a.       Cleaning schedule: Periodic cleaning interval is based on local conditions, energy production degradation and cost to clean

The Sunflower cpv® Isofoton HCPV modules are virtually glare-free.  In order to work correctly, the modules are always perpendicular to the sun.  This mean that any reflection can only be seen of the viewer (e.g.: aircraft) is exactly between the sun and the module.  In such case the viewer will cast a shadow on the modules, minimizing any glare.Sunflower cpv ’s unique 2-axis tracker holds the module at its center of gravity, virtually eliminating gravity forces and therefore the most of the wear on our gearbox and motor.  This means backlash over the life of the system remains within specifications and requires no maintenance.  The gearbox is sealed and protected from the environment (rain and dust); it utilizes evaporation free lubricants adapted from the space program so it can comfortably provide a 30 year maintenance free life.  Finally, Sunflower cpvTM uses the actual power coming from each module to accurately point them at the sun, eliminating the need for unreliable sensors and cameras as pointing devices.  This has the added benefit of providing built in status monitoring information down to the module level easing operating and maintenance cost.  The operator only visits the site when there is a need and can pinpoint problems before arriving on site.  All this status monitoring information is delivered to the array PC wirelessly eliminating the need for additional cabling in the field.  It can also be integrated to third party monitoring software of your choice. Sunflower cpv® Isofoton  modules have a contemporary clean design.  The unique tracking system gives the impression of a moving sculpture.  Our Tracker Sunflower cpv solution will provide Avellino with a high-tech and environment friendly “Green” statement.  On a global basis, will have the most efficient and effective solar system among their peers in the industry.

Project Overview

The below table provides an overview of the Sunflower cpv®  installed power and size and the annual electricity produced in MWh/yr.
1.       Earth: In the table below we took 875 HCPV modules, totaling up to 997.5 kWpDC, covering approx. 20.000 m2 of shaded area of 55 to 65 percent shade factor at solar noon.  Assuming all possible power generation losses up to the bi-directional revenue meter of 23.2%, this Sunflower cpv® solar system will provide an astonishing annual electricity production of 2.094.750 MWh/year, which is 20% higher than conventional PV-Tilt at 5o.

·       Auto-recovery from a power outage
o   All startups, whether from initial system startup, recovery from power-outage, or recovery from a planned shutdown follow the same procedure.
o   The Array PC is the first item to turn on, and it controls the startup of the rest of the Array.  The Array PC first configures itself, if needed, by downloading array-specific information from a central server.  Next it starts up the 802.15.4 network.  If it was previously in a stowed or maintenance state, it waits until the condition has been cleared.  Finally, it sets all the Modules to tracking, in a slow and controlled manner.  First identified Modules are "activated", then unidentified Modules are identified and "activated", but always in a "fan-out" pattern, to keep the power consumed while no power is being produced to a minimal level, within that which the Bootstrap Power Supply can provide
·       Manual Operation
o   Although the system is designed to operate autonomously, it can be controlled manually, either through a user-friendly web front-end, or programmatically. Modules can be controlled individually or groups.  In extreme cases, a set of Modules may be physically disconnected from the system, and then individually driven to a specific position via a hand-held joystick controller by factory authorized personnel.
·       Central Operation
o   Central control of the system is provided through a user-friendly web front-end, which may be accessed either on-site, or remotely.  The system normally operates autonomously, but each Module can be addressed, monitored and/or controlled individually or in groups.
·       Maintenance Mode
o   During maintenance, cleaning of the HCPV modules, a maintenance mode can be selected, in which the modules will face each other in a vertical mode for easy and safe cleaning.
·         Datasheet
o    See schedule A for the Sunflower cpvTM specification datasheet
The customer’s electrical load draws power from either the solar HCPV system or the utility grid seamlessly and transparently.  For safety reasons, grid-tied inverters systems disconnect (anti islanding mode to stop producing power) during power outages to prevent power from being transmitted to the grid while utility workers are repairing the lines.  For clients who need a power backup solution, Hcpv d.o.o. can engineer this option.

Sunflower cpv® Equipment Warranty Summary
Hcpv d.o.o. provides the following standard comprehensive warranty terms:

The Hcpv d.o.o.  Sardegna 997.5 KWh/year Hearth project Design & Configuration

Hcpv d.o.o. has completed a preliminary technical assessment of the Hcpv d.o.o.  Avellino project
at 997.5 kWpDC (total) and has created a conceptual system design with the following characteristics.

Power Output and Layout

Hcpv d.o.o. tests every array before commissioning a system to verify that the kWp and kW-DC-PTC ratings are met.
The preliminary system, Hcpv d.o.o. has designed for the Avellino lot, has a production ratio of 1,400_kWh/kWp (AC).  This means that for each kWp, this system will produce 1,400 kWh of AC energy per year directly to your facility.  This is the fully de-rated measure for calculating the maximum reduction in facility demand.
We have provided the DC and AC power production outputs in kWh/yr.  For this we took in account real-life de-rating factors due to wire losses, shadowing, efficiency, soiling, etc.  Please see the table below for our estimation of de-rating losses in case of the Sunflower cpv® system use.

Degradation
The production estimates above are for the first year of system life.  However, due to the breakdown of the silicon material from long-term exposure to UV radiation and thermal and electrical cycling, we estimate that production will decrease an average of 0.9% per year.  Industry research has found that crystalline modules typically degrade 0.4% per year, but we prefer to take a more conservative approach in our production estimates and financial modeling of 0.4% per year.

Low-Profile Design
Unlike large trackers typical of CPV systems, the Sunflower cpv® system tracks a single rigid module allowing for a low profile design (approx. five (5) feet high). Keeping the module low to the ground where wind speeds are lowest improves tracking accuracy by limiting wind flexure. It also eliminates certain permitting requirements associated with larger structures.  As an additional benefit, the Sunflower cpvTM system can easily be relocated and is easily adapted for applications.
Ease of Installation
The module mounting frames are pre-assembled in the factory to reduce the need for expensive and time-consuming field labor. The primary wiring, micro-converter, controller and status monitoring system are all integrated into the modular 5-module frame-sets at the factory. These frame-sets are designed to quickly connect to adjacent units, perfectly spacing them apart to reduce inter-unit shading.

Smart-combiner Technology
The Sunflower cpv® system includes two (2) 80~90 VDC to 390VDC proprietary DC smart-combiner, each supporting five (5) or six (6) Sunflower® Isofoton modules, mounted on either side of the Sunflower cpv® system.
This proprietary smart-combiner technology is used to improve energy delivery by conditioning modules' power output and optimizing maximum power point.  A Micro-Converter optimizes Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) over only five (5) modules versus up to several thousand modules in traditional single inverter MPPT architecture. This provides more precise and effective MPPT and therefore more usable energy. In addition, all five modules have their separate DC input in parallel.  This architecture reduces electrical losses within the array and increases the energy produced. This occurs when both shaded modules and un-shaded modules are present, and under low light conditions such as sunrise and sunset when traditional inverters would shut down due to under voltage conditions.

More energy harvesting:
·         Per set of five (5) / six (6) Sunflower® modules Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) contributes to energy harvest gains of 5 – 25%.
·         With Sunflower cpv™ Micro-Converters the Sunflower cpv™ modules are resilient to any soiling or shading.
Reliable
·         MTBF 120 years
·         No single point of failure.
·         The Micro-Converters provides continuous monitoring of the status of each PV module.
·         Soft-switching reduces component heat
Advanced
·         Quick and simple installation, with less than 15 minutes mean time to repair.
·         Low current / low loss strings in parallel with maximum redundancy.
·         The system provides 24/7 monitoring and management for each module.

Field Installed System
For field installation, the Sunflower cpv® system is self balancing and can simply be set on the ground
Two methods to secure the Sunflower cpv® frame-sets are recommended:
1.)    Have the flange at the bottom of each tracker pole rest on the ground and drive a stake or post through the mounting holes, by using a handheld pneumatic post driver.

2.)  Use pour-in-place concrete.  First build the first rows of Sunflower cpv™ frame-sets, please them simply on the ground, form a standard mold around the poles and pour in concrete.  (see picture below)

Status Monitoring to Facilitate Efficient O&M
Status monitoring is a critical element to thoroughly understanding the operation of your HCPV system and tracking your energy (kWh) production.  Our robust status monitoring solution allows for simple review of energy generation, site weather conditions, and analysis of actual power output against expected values.  It also helps demonstrate your commitment to clean energy by calculating environmental benefits and emissions savings.
Part of the tracking method through peak-power measurements, is that we measure the power of each individual cell.  This meanst that we can show the status of each HCPV modulo.
Data Acquisition System (DAS) – Captures system DC output and weather variables.  The DAS equipment consists of a weather station, host-computer, and wireless communications link and can transfer data to an external third-party revenue-grade energy metering & performance monitoring system.
·         Weather Station – Collects environmental parameters (irradiance, ambient temperature, wind speed) for use in performance modeling.
·         Integrated Web Portal & API
Password-protected access for the duration of your warranty or service period
User-friendly presentation of measured and historical data
     Comprehensive analytical and reporting functionality
Monitoring and system status review to ensure optimal system operation & maintenance
Fast alarming in the event of failures or malfunctions through standard API
With real-time equipment status and weather data are presented to viewers in an intuitive format.  The portal can be viewed from any computer using a standard web browser.  Detailed historical data can also be accessed for graphing and analysis.

Hcpv d.o.o. designs and manufacture HCPV equipment that maximizes returns for our clients.
We use the following metrics for comparison and determination of optimal value:
·         Annual kWh Generation – A given solar system design may or may not produce the same amount of energy on an annual basis.  While system size (kW) is often referenced as a key metric, annual energy generation (kWh) is the most important metric for comparing system performance.
·         Financial Value (€/W vs. €/kWh) – Historically, solar companies competed on a euro-per-Watt basis.  More sophisticated clients and vendors now use euro-per-kilowatt-hour produced for evaluating cost effectiveness.
·         AC System Size – As a customer, you use the AC power generated by the system, not the DC power (note, kW-DC-STC is equivalent to kWp).   AC system size (or rating) is a better metric for the efficiency of the HCPV system in generating usable power for your facility.
·         Shading Analysis – Our proposed solution accounts for areas that are negatively impacted due to shading from obstructions, and we have not proposed the installation of PV modules in these areas.  Hcpv d.o.o. believes that clients should not be paying for modules that are not producing optimal power on a daily basis.
·         Modeling Assumptions – Hcpv d.o.o. believes in an honest and transparent process.  We share the assumptions that we have made to model the financial and energy calculations for all of our projects.  We use conservative estimates for energy production, utility rate inflation, and module degradation in our calculations.
 2.        Project Management & Training
Project Management
Hcpv d.o.o. will assign a project manager towards any, Italy solar HCPV Project.
 Training
Hcpv d.o.o. will provide on-site and classroom installation instructions to assure correct and efficient installation of the Sunflower cpv® frame-set and system components.
Hcpv d.o.o. will provide an on-site operation & maintenance training.
